I've never really owned a credit card. Not one that I've used, at least- I've kept them for emergencies. I've always preferred to use Debit cards so I don't go shopping happy and get myself in trouble. Plus, I'm notoriously unorganized and know I'd forget to make payments on time.

This has largely worked, but it's time to grow up:
    • I want to build credit and a credit card is a great way
    • I make a large percentage of my purchases online
    • I could probably easily automate credit card payments through online banking
    • I travel a lot and would love to earn travel points
So what card would you recommend for someone who makes a large volume of online purchases and travels a lot? What credit cards have you owned and loved/hated and what banks work best with these cards?

I have M&T Bank as my primary bank if that makes a difference. I prefer traveling on Airtran but don't mind any airline and I love Westin hotel properties and Embassy Suites but will also patronize other hotels.
